I talked with my mom a while back about "going somewhere" this summer, and recently she said she wants to get away soon. We agreed on the week of July 9-15, probably leaving Monday the 10th early in the morning. She asked me where I would like to go, and I said "I'm not sure". She then said "What about Finger Lakes?" (which is in western NY state) and I said "that sounds like a possibility". What I might do is go along with the plan and when we're on the road overshoot and "accidentially" go beyond the Finger Lakes area and then I will say that we're close to Niagara Falls how about if we go there? I'm afraid to ask my mom outright that I want to go there because I'm afraid that she might say something negative, see my mom and her friend were there without us September 1998. My mom promised she would take us there, but she said more recently (few years ago) that it's a bit far, and that I don't think you will be happy there, it's just a few haunted houses and that the boat ride at the falls is choppy. I hope her mood is better now. One plus is we won't need passports to cross the border this year, they're not a requirement until 2008 or 2009. I need some advice quick on what to do.

What do you mean by "overshoot and go beyond Finger Lakes" Robert? You won't be doing the driving....are you the navigator? Your mom asked you where you wanted to go, just come right out and tell her Niagara Falls. There will be more for you to do in Niagara Falls than Finger Lakes. Don't beat around the bush with her, or she will never take you. And if she doesn't take you, get a job and save up your money and take the bus. For Christs sake, you are 32 years old! You are not a baby anymore. Your mom won't be around forever, so you better start getting use to taking care of yourself. What does your brother want to do?

Sorry, sorry, sorry, but I had to laugh at Crippled Visions' reply to robert. Always remember, honesty is the best policy! She asked you where you wanted to go? So why didn't you just TELL her? Why go somewhere when you know your heart won't be in it? I've learned a long time ago; it's better to open-up; then to keep how you truly feel inside and be miserable. Don't really know who you guys are so sorry if I put my 2 cents in.

Ok, ok, ok, enough clowning around, I had a quick talk with my mom and she agreed to go to Canada because I told her it was only 50 more miles from where she originally wanted to go. We'll just have to wait and see what happens. I'm hoping that all goes according to my master plan. My plan is to go straight to the border, cross over and stay at a hotel on the Canada side so that all the attractions are within easy reach and so that we only have to cross the border once each way. I heard the border officers frown upon crossing the border back and forth multiple times within a short time period. We'll see if we can make it in with just our driver's licenses/state ID's and possibly our social security cards. No passports required yet. That won't happen until 2008. They have alot of new stuff there in terms of attractions, etc., they still have the old haunted houses that are on this site in the article, but they added alot of new stuff in the past several years.

Go for it Robert. I wish I was going. I've been jonesing a good walk through for a long time. The only walk through haunted attraction I'll be able to get to this year will be Haunted Manor in Seaside Heights which is a very good one.

Good for you, robert! Please take plenty of pictures! How long are you going for? Heard about the Canadian passport thing. Actually, I don't blame them; with the way the world is today. Hope you have a fantastic time!

Haunted Manor looks very good. It's a shame that there aren't more walk throughs like in NJ. I guess it has to do with the strict fire laws and building codes that stop new ones from being built. There are other tourist towns with walk throughs, such as Lake George, NY, Salem, Mass., and Niagara Falls, ON, Canada.

Uh oh, my plans have hit a snag. My mom's friend now wants to go to the....THOUSAND ISLANDS!!!! AAAAAAHHHHHH! That's like 240 miles away from the falls. My only hope now is to convince him to change his mind, or else do a circle trip by going through Toronto after leaving TI and passing through the falls and go home that way. The problem is that he's been to the falls before even before he met my mom and with my mom once several years ago. So, it's old hat to him. But we've (me and my brother) never been there. Toronto has nicer hotels than Kingston (near the islands) in Canada. I'm looking to stay at a full service hotel with an indoor pool and hot tub, not a roadside motor inn or an el cheapo Travelodge, Econo Lodge, etc. If I don't make it to the falls there's always next year. Oh well.

robert, do you HAVE to go? Can't you take a bus trip to where you want to go? What makes tou think you HAVE to go with your mom?? You sound so high-strung and fraustrated. You need to start thinking about what's best for you and what YOU want to do. Life's too short and before you know it, you'll wonder where it went.

Uh, my mom would be too scared to let me off on my own. She's afraid something will happen to me in that "big bad world" out there. She would be worrying every minute. The only times we traveled far by ourselves me and my brother were with our grandmother (my deceased (1986) dad's mom who is still alive now in Florida) years ago and on scout camp. Otherwise, we did all our vacations together. Unfortuately my mom's male friend who she has been going with since 1993/1994 has a problem with NF. He was already there with a lady he worked for selling vitamins or something before he met my mom. And plus on that surprise trip with my mom only Sept. 1998. So, it's old hat to him. The only way we'll drag him there is if we don't tell him and surprise him on the way so he can't back out. He never really got vacations growing up only day trips because he lived on a farm and his mom wasn't and still isn't much for vacations. She's practically at home 24/7 with his sister and her husband and soon off to college daughter. His dad passed in 2003.

Being a mother myself, take my word for it, you NEVER stop worrying about your kids. BUT you still need to get off by yourself; you'll feel like a new person. Talking about a big bad world; my daughter is going to Iraq in a couple weeks for the 2nd time, so imagine how I feel. She's the one I have alot of memories with when we used to go to Wildwood. We also went to Ocean City, Maryland alot. My kids practically killed me at times dragging me on rides, but I still loved it.

Did you go on any of the haunted houses, dark rides at Wildwood and Ocean City, MD? Did you go in Castle Dracula, nancy? That was one of the best dark rides hands down. Unlike most crappy dark rides (Morey's, cough, cough) you really felt like you were in Dracula's Castle, from the creepy organ music outside and in, to the detailed rooms and sets, the live actors that both told a story and scared you. Also most stand alone walk-throughs look like a haunted house/mansion/castle all the way around, unlike dark rides that have three plain walls behind the facade. That's what's missing today, dark rides that don't look so "junky". In my opinion the haunted attractions of Niagara Falls look better than most other surviving dark rides here in the States. Especially that Frankenstein one. Well, I'm off to Canada (hopefully) on Monday.

Yes, I went in Castle Dracula. I can remember standing in line, like it was yesterday, thinking,"Why am I doing this?" But I had a blast! You REALLY thought you were in a REAL castle-like atmosphere. And the music was VERY creepy. Never forgot that organ music til this day. Have you ever gone to Disney World in Florida? They have a Haunted Mansion attraction there that I never forgot, either. After you walk into the main room, that REALLY looks like the inside of a castle, everything starts changing around and the floor (or ceiling?) starts dropping, which makes you feel reall strange. You go on this ride inside and you can see ghosts at different areas. They also had real actors. Everything was so realistic it really left an impression on you! I never forgot it.

And rides today; especially haunted attractions; I think, look kind of junky, compared to what I remember. I haven't been to Canada in ages. I never even knew they had all the attractions everybody's always talking about. Guess I was in a different area. But, I'll tell you, I REALLY miss "our" shore on the east coast. Wish I could be walking the boardwalk right now.
