The three-alarm blaze started at about 4 a.m. in the 3200 block of Boardwalk. Firefighters said Fortune Sportswear suffered heavy fire, smoke and water damage.
The store had been a pizza shop for 20 years and just opened as a T-shirt store on Friday night.
John Afra, the owner of High Octane, the two stores next door, said the fire couldn't have come at a worse time.
"We have about two or three weeks that are really strong, and this is one of the biggest weekends, so we missed that. It's really bad," he said.
Bill Scott, a Wildwood who was out on the boardwalk Saturday, also said the fire was "a shame" because the summer season had just started.
Firefighters had to rescue three people who were living in apartments over one of the stores.
"There was one rescue out of a window, and by rescue, I mean other occupants were assisted out of their buildings on their own," Wildwood Fire Chief Conrad Johnson said.
According to fire crews, the fire displaced about 10 people. Some people were treated for smoke inhalation, but no other injuries were reported.
P.J. Nickels, High Octane's store manager, said the fire was "terrible."
"I mean it's a shame. I really feel bad for these gentlemen, but I'm thankful that nobody got hurt in this fire," he said. "It's just an unfortunate situation."
Authorities said the fire started in a pile of trash behind the buildings, but it was not known exactly what set the trash on fire.
The Saturday morning blaze caused more than $200,000 to four buildings. The clothing store that was most heavily damaged is expected to be closed for at least a month.
The stores' owners said they hope to get their businesses back up and running as soon as possible................ no wonder they dont want to try to rebuild, jewish lightining must be part of the family crest
