Does anyone remember the Monmouth Mall's haunted house walk-through in the early 1970's? It was the best small attraction I ever went through and it scared the Hell out of my second grade butt.It was put-on by talented, but drugged-out college kids.
The tour guide was a skeleton faced tap-dancer with a top-hat and fishnet stockings. She took us through a tight dark hallway where hidden actors would grab and pinch your legs ,hard enough to leave marks.A few of the scenes went like this:
After beind locked in a small room, you would be forced to watch a guillotine execution.A ghoul would then pull the newly severed head out of the basket and then force it in your face.
In a pitch black room you would be chased by The Thing, who was an actress completely covered in a black suit which made her invisible except for silver flecks in the fabric. She would grab at you with her long finger extensions.
An actress in an electric chair-like contraption would beg for help.when it was switched on her face would flash with diffrent colors(which was done with blacklight paint) as she screamed her death-throws.
Another actress was standing on what seemed to be a mainger. She was reciting a speech(which I can't remember)when a Hellish yellow light would come from the mainger, causing her to contort and then freeze in an anguished pose. This was pretty scary in a WTF sense.
A mad scientist re-animated a one legged brute with a face like a neaderthal skull. It would kill the scientist ,then hobble after the patrons on one leg.Again, this was terrifing in the WTF sense.
They had the classic Dracula scene. He would rise slowly from his coffin as our guide gave her speech.Back in the 70's,Dracula was the scariest thing in the world to a little kid,so we were all freaking out.He and his brides would also pinch our necks, like the actors in the first hallway.
Me and my sister totally lost it at this point and had to be led out.Only this ment we had to work our way out, without the other patrons and guide,so the remaining actors hounded us mercilessly.
The last scene I can remember ,as we worked our way out,was a bunch of ragged actors crawling on a straw strewn floor, begging for help as Grim Reapers slowly emerged from ornate stone niches to deliver THE TOUCH OF DEATH to their victums. They would then procede after us with their long boney fingers. We ran through the rest of the sets screaming with our eyes closed, running into various walls and props. We missed alot of the last sets because of that. Then when I got out I begged my Mom to let me go in again. My sister was about ready to kill me.
My wife remembers this haunt too.She also freaked out. They had more mercy on her, though. They gave her a backstage tour and showed her the actors putting on make-up.
Around that same time the Mall had " Bigfoot 'frozen in a slab of ice, that cost $2.00 to see.
Damn,I miss the 70's.
